Diseño curricular y promocion

Volviendo, adonde ponemos plata, cuanta, que promocionamos en la Universidad?

Yo no se, pero si DARPA dice esto:

The United States has entered into a significant national decline in the number of college graduates with STEM degrees. This downward trend is an issue of national importance as it affects our capacity to maintain a technological lead in critical skills and disciplines related to CS-STEM. Our ability to compete in the increasingly internationalized stage will be hindered without college graduates with the ability to understand and innovate cutting edge technologies in the decades to come.

DARPA is interested in proposals with innovative new ideas to encourage students to major in CS-STEM and pursue careers as engineers and scientists. Increasing the number of graduates in Computer Science is a key goal, but the project will also be considered a success if the number of graduates in the broader STEM community is increased.

Ah, para los que no saben, DARPA es la agencia que pago Arpanet, que dio origen a Internet, y STEM es el acronimo (yo no lo sabia tampoco) de: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

What do you think?

There is a difference of opinion within the FT over the Icelandic president’s decision to block a deal to repay the UK and the Netherlands more than €3.9bn lost by savers in a failed Icelandic bank.

Lex write that if Iceland refuses to repay the debt, it risks becoming an international pariah. However, the FT’s editorial argues that Iceland should not be put in a debtors’ prison.

Martin Wolf’s view: “This is not about cutting a running deficit, which is, indeed, unavoidable. It is about forcing innocent people to assume gigantic liabilities for which they have no legal or moral responsibility. How would UK citizens feel if they were forced to assume a debt of £400bn because of HSBC’s failure to meet deposit insurance liabilities in Asia? Let the UK take the bank’s assets and leave it at that.”

Free Market, FT y el hierro

Y, si, quien podria decir que FT escribiera esto, el miedo a los chinos?

Iron ore pricing war

The world’s second-largest commodity market by value – after crude oil – iron ore is central to the world’s economy. It forms part of the production process of almost anything that requires steel: ships, buildings, refrigerators, cars.

Since the 1960s representatives of the world’s largest mining companies have held secretive negotiations to set prices for contracts with the big steel producers. Traditionally, the first deal between a miner and a major steelmaker set a “benchmark” which was followed by the rest of the industry, from Japan and South Korea to China and Germany.

During the past year this pricing system has been challenged after China, the world’s largest importer of the commodity, refused to accept a “benchmark” deal between the miners and Japan, opting instead to buy in the spot market. This failure is a threat to the 40-year-old traditional system and has boosted the importance of the spot market and hybrid contracts.

A move away from the annual benchmark prices could lead to more volatile prices for steel and other goods and have an impact on miners and steelmakers’ profitability.

Spirit rover clocks up six years on Mars

Still battling on from Red Planet sand trap

NASA's Spirit Mars rover today passes its sixth anniversary on the Red Planet, albeit bogged down in sandy soil which looks likely to be its final resting place.

Spirit arrived on Mars at 8:35 pm PST on 3 January, 2004 (04:35 GMT on 4 January), followed by its twin Opportunity on 24 January. The pair were intitially expected to last three months, but have proved they have the Right Stuff by surviving "six Earth years, or 3.2 Mars years", as NASA puts it

However, Spirit got stuck in a sand trap dubbed "Troy" in Mars's southern hemisphere back in April. Having already suffered a right-front wheel failure in 2006, its right-rear wheel then succumbed to intermittent failure. NASA explains: "Drives with four or five operating wheels have produced little progress toward escaping the sand trap. The latest attempts resulted in the rover sinking deeper in the soil."
